Dr. Ralph Nonninger, the founder and the former CEO of German ItN Nanovation AG (ISIN: DE000A0JL461), recently returned ItN as a technical consultant specialized in ceramic membrane products.
As the product technical consultant for ceramic membrane, Dr. Nonninger will work with the ceramic membrane product team in both SafBon Headquarters and the ItN, Germany to research and develop ceramic membrane technology. Dr. Nonninger’s will mainly focus on two parts, guiding Chinese and German teams in the development and improvement of ceramic flat ultrafiltration (UF) membranes and the corresponding components; and enhancing the production level of Nantong Membrane Factory.
In 1990, Mr. Ralph Nonninger graduated from Universität des Saarlandes (University of Saarland, Germany). After that, he joined Leibnitz Institut for New Materials for the next decade. During this period, he got his PhD degree, became a researcher, a leader of team and the director of ceramic membrane department. Then in 2000, he founded ItN and served as Executive Director, Chief Technology Officer and later General Manager. He left ItN in July, 2011. Dr. Ralph Nonninger is currently Chairman of the German Nanotechnology Association and is selected for the German Federal Government's “Go cluster initiative”.
Dr. Nonninger has accumulated a plenty of core technologies in the field of ceramic membranes for many years, he owns (or has hosted the application) about 200 patents in the field of ceramic membranes. On the one hand, as the world's leading expert in the field of ceramic membranes, the return of Dr. Nonninger's will help SafBon and ItN cultivate better R&D teams, and lead the ItN ceramic membrane to a new peak. On the other hand, his joining will helo SafBon in taking the advantage of German high-end equipment manufacturing technology. It contributes the company in improving its competitiveness, promoting the ceramic membrane market development, becoming more internationalization and transforming the company into a profit mode, which is specially explained as "environmental protection equipment, engineering construction, operation and maintenance, design consultation".

On July 20th, the president of Brazil-China International Development Chamber of Commerce led a delegation to visit SafBon, Shanghai, including the mayor and other political and business leaders from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The two sides conducted in-depth exchanges on water resources, water treatment and other environmental and ecological aspects.
The state of Rio Grande do Sul is the southernmost state in Brazil. It borders the Atlantic Ocean in the east, Argentina in the west and Uruguay in the south. Rio Grande do Sul, with an area of 280 thousand square kilometers and 497 cities, is the first agricultural and pastoral area in Brazil. The industry there is mainly composed of textile, food, tannery, tobacco, chemistry, metallurgy, machinery, shipbuilding, coal mining and sawing wood. China is the largest trade partner of Brazil, and Brazil is the largest trade partner of China in Latin America, too. China and Brazil have established the China-Brazil Capacity Cooperation Fund and China-Latin America Cooperation Fund to provide financial support for Brazil's infrastructure construction, people's livelihood projects and major trade. Recently, SafBon, together with German ItN ceramic flat membrane, participated in the open bidding for the MBR process segment of the ceramic flat membrane deep treatment project produced by SINOPEC Puguang gas field, and won the bid as the first candidate. It will also successfully sign a contract to become the online supplier of SINOPEC through this project.
Puguang gas field is one of the three major onshore gas fields in China. The designed water amount of the project for the recovery of water depth in this gas field is 1440m3/d. The main water quality parameters are salinity ≤30000mg/L, Cl-≤15000mg/L, the content of sulfide is 8mg/L, and the total content of alkali is≤ 700mg/L, Ca2+ is ≤15mg/L, and Mg2+ is ≤15mg/L. Sludge concentration is ≤ 15000mg/L. The water quality has the characteristics of high salt, high corrosion and high concentration of sludge. It is a typical industrial waste water with high difficulty. Under these conditions, after nearly a year's argumentation and investigation, Safbon and the owner and the designer finally decided to choose the ceramic flat membrane in MBR.
As the first project of SINOPEC to apply the ceramic flat membrane in MBR to the deep recovery of the produced water in oil and gas fields, the bid of ba 'an water supplies has undoubtedly filled the gap in the domestic oil and gas field market in this field. This is also a breakthrough in the field of oil and gas fields after ItN membrane successfully signed the coal-chemical MBR project of China coal group in May this year. This project will give full play to the advantages of ItN ceramic membrane in anti-pollution, high flux, low operating cost and long life. Recently, Safbon Water has had an unforgettable day, Safbon Water and Dongying District Finance Company formally signed a joint venture agreement for the first phase project of Shikou Town Solid Waste Disposal Center in Dongying City. The signing ceremony was led by Wang Xian, President of Safbon Water, and the project team and members of the party group of Dongying District, deputy head of the district, Liu Chenyong, various government departments of Dongying District and financial companies. The signing ceremony was held, which means that the Shikou Town Solid Waste Disposal Center project in Dongying City was officially launched. The project is funded by Safbon Water for 80%, local government for 20%, and is built and operated by Safbon Water.
In his speech to the project, President Wang Xian fully expressed that Safbon Water has an expert team in the solid waste field, which enables the project to adopt advanced and reliable hazardous waste treatment and disposal technology to ensure that hazardous wastes are properly disposed of. The treatment of wastewater from the salt chemical industrial area in Zhangshu City, Jiangxi Province is a chronic problem that has not been solved for many years. Under strict environmental protection supervision requirements, the local management committee requested technical assistance from SafBon. SafBon was asked to assist Zhangshu Salt Chemical Industry Park to solve the technical problem of wastewater discharge failure. Eucalyptus salt chemical wastewater has the characteristics of low BC ratio, poor biodegradability, high salt content and complex composition, and the upstream companies themselves have advanced oxidation treatment systems. Therefore, such water quality is extremely difficult to degrade COD wastewater. With the conventional biochemical system treatment, when the COD degradation rate is difficult to exceed 30%, even if the treatment load is reduced and the residence time of hydrolysis and acidification is increased, the COD degradation rate is difficult to reach 50%.
ItN Membrane Bioreactor
The membrane bioreactor (MBR) used in the pilot project is a fully automated small integrated device installed by the German ItN company. It uses a compact MBBR biofilm reactor as the front section and a ItN ceramic flat membrane MBR system as the latter, and constructs a flexible and changeable small biochemical reverse integrated system. The device combines the compound biochemical function of MBBR and the MBR high sludge load function together, with a full automatic control system, which can simulate a variety of process flow, including A-O, A2/O, A-O-A and so on.
In order to verify the universal high efficiency characteristics of the pilot plant, the technical personnel set the system process as the most common A2/O+MBBR, and set up a comprehensive and detailed test procedure, including single-machine commissioning, equipment clean water linkage debugging, low pollution Mud feed water commissioning, high sludge volume water commissioning, and debugging of different cleaning control methods. During the whole commissioning process, the maximum sludge concentration reached 7000mg/L, the average removal rate of COD was 51.3%, the total phosphorus removal rate was 63.8%, and the average removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was 95.3%. Although the target of the pilot plant in camphor tree is to degrade COD, the above data also show that it has good effect on ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus in sewage.

Germany ItN company of Safbon participated in Shanghai Aquatech international water exhibition during May 31- June 2. ItN company demonstrated the technology of nano-ceramic flat ultrafiltration membrane, which attracted the attention of water treatment engineers due to its high temperature performance and long life. On April 1, 2018, the 2nd-phase project of Yuncheng second sewage treatment plant of SafBon located in the coking Industrial Park of Yuncheng was successfully launched. This project is the coking waste water of the industrial park, which is difficult to deal with and requires high technology. It is a long-standing problem in the local area. After treatment, the effluent should meet the national discharge standard. Yuncheng county is located in the southwestern part of Shandong province. Zhuzhaoxin river which runs through the eastern part of the county and is an important part of the trunk canal of the eastern route of the South to North Water Transfer Project.
Therefore, ensuring the water quality of the water system has always been the top priority for the local government and environmental protection departments. The two phase of the Yuncheng second sewage treatment plant is located in the Yuncheng coking Industrial Park. And this coking Industrial park is located just right in the Zhu- Zhao New River Basin, and the drainage of the park directly into the Zhu- Zhao New River. In order to ensure the water quality of the Shandong section of the main canal in the south to the north project, the Heze municipal government promulgated the most stringent industrial wastewater discharge standards in the history of March 2018, requiring the concentration of COD less than 30mg/l, the concentration of total phosphorus less than 0.3mg/l and ammonia nitrogen less than 2mg/l. This brought unprecedented pressure to the Yuncheng county government and environmental protection departments, and also raised more stringent target requirements for the two phase expansion project.
Coking wastewater is one of the most difficult types of industrial wastewater, with complex components and a wide variety of components, not only the high concentration of CODcr and NH3-N, but also a large number of phenolic compounds and polycyclic aromatic compounds, heterocyclic compounds and aliphatic compounds containing nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, with many toxic components and high chromaticity, brings great difficulties to biodegradation and the cost of processing is high. At the same time, under the current environmental protection situation, the coking enterprises are built with advanced oxidation pretreatment system in the internal waste water, and the pre treated wastewater is reconcentrated to the industrial sewage plant of the park, which makes the coking wastewater more difficult to break down the chain degradation. Therefore, how to deal with the "two coking wastewater" to achieve qualified discharge has always been one of the most difficult subjects in the domestic and foreign water treatment industry.
Facing the difficulty “secondary coking wastewater” problem, SafBon performed full evaluation of the characteristics of local coking wastewater pollution and conducted on-site pilot tests and scientific experiments. The technical solutions issued by SafBon based on the above materials received the approval from the government finally.
At present, the second phase expansion project of Yucheng Second Sewage Treatment Plant is under construction. It is expected that the commissioning phase will start at the end of December. The completion of this project is believed to completely solve the problem of coking wastewater treatment in the park, producing obvious economic benefits in the local area, also playing a positive role in water quality protection of the South-Water-to-North Project.

Recently, SafBon has signed with China Coal Group Ordos Energy Chemical Co., Ltd. to apply German ItN nano coating ceramic flat membrane to its coal-to-methanol chemical wastewater treatment project, with the capacity of 9000m3/d, after multi-disciplinary approach made by technical experts of China Coal Group. It is expected that the installation, commissioning and steady operation of the MBR project will be completed by the end of this year.
ItN ceramic ultrafiltration(UF) membrane has the advantages of high flux, excellent anti-fouling, low energy consumption, long lifetime, small footprint, automatic system control, easy installation and operation, which makes it particularly suitable for the treatment of industrial waste water such as coal chemical wastewater.
This is the expansion and optimization design project of China Coal Eenergy, which requires that the existing water treatment facilities do not increase land occupation, while the water treatment capacity and effluent quality requirement of the second phase of 1 million tons of methanol project are doubled. Since the first contact in the end of last year, China Coal Eenergy has been attracted by ItN Ceramic UF Membrane’s unique advantages, such as high throughput, high water quality, long service life of up to 25 years, and in-situ chemical cleaning (no lifting required). After four months of technical exchange and expert demonstration process, SafBon and China Coal Energy have reached an agreement and it is expected that the installation, commissioning and stable operation phases of MBR membrane units will be completed before the end of this year.
Coal chemical wastewater is one of industrial refractory wastewaters. It has characteristics such as complex types of pollution, high concentration, hard biodegradability, and large fluctuations in raw water quality. Membrane treatment processes cannot normally run smoothly without proper system design and membrane product selection. The expanded biochemical unit adopts its patented EBA combination process. The MBR unit adopts German ItN nano-plate ceramic membrane. The process can be described as a combination of advanced technologies, and it provides stable and low-cost operation for China Coal Energy.
The implementation of this project will fully demonstrate the application advantages of ItN ceramic membrane and create a new era of ceramic MBR membrane in the coal chemical wastewater and similar refractory industrial wastewater treatment fields, providing new impetus for China's environmental improvement.
